i wanted to answer this as soon as i saw it but i had to practice self control and finish my exam but trust ur now my favorite anon <333

under the break actually bc boy am i yappin

they met the first time in 7th grade and paul, was already a little off kilter from the rest of the boys in his grade, he had yet to start being interested girls but his dad says it’s nothing to worry about that it’ll come in time. but then he meets darry and it’s like something clicked. paul doesn’t get it at first but there’s something in him that’s desperate for darry’s attention. despite his best efforts they’re acquaintances at best but the first time darry says hi to him in passing paul as the largest grin on his face for the rest of the day

the start of their friendship is in 8th grade when they’re at football tryouts. funnily enough they didn’t become friends over football but over late math homework. during their 15 minute break, paul had been struggling and on the verge of ripping his hair out and darry came over took one look at the assignment and said it was easy as hell. if it had been anyone else paul would’ve fought them right then and there, but it was darry. and instead his cheeks reddened and his stomach started doing the same flips it always does when he’s embarrassed himself. against his better judgment he asks darry for help if he’s so smart and somehow they blow through the hw with 5 minutes of their break to spare.

it’s in 9th grade when paul realizes people don’t usually get so giddy at the thought of their best friend. he realizes this when darry offhandedly asks if he wants to go to their schools winter formal together since neither of them had dates. it’s the quickness of which he says yes that paul thinks to himself that maybe something isn’t right. that maybe there's a reason he hadnt already asked a girl out to the formal. he pushes the thought away just as quickly though because it’s their last yr of middle school and they need to get ready for their high school football team tryouts

everything clicks for paul in 10th grade. it’s their first year of high school and paul just got the keys to his car and his dad asks where he was gonna go first. the expected answer (the answer paul gives) would be to pick up beverly and go to the drive in. instead the first thing he thinks of is picking up darry so he could see the excited gleam in his eyes (a look paul just simply adores and wouldn't mind seeing for the rest of his life) and then the two would go for what would be the start of many joyrides. that’s when it clicks for paul. the other guys his age all had girls to pick up when they first got their cars. they were all excited to take their girls to the drive in or even to the top of some hill for privacy. their girl was always their first thought. but paul’s was of darry. paul's first thought was always of darry. paul is in tenth grade when he realizes he has a crush on his best friend (he does not go driving the same day he gets his keys, instead he goes in his room and sobs)

(he sobs at the realization that it’s not normal to get so excited at your best friends laugh. it’s not normal to be 16 and have yet to bring a girl home as more than a friend. it’s not normal that his favorite part of the week is when he and darry have sleepovers and get to bare their souls to each other from the comfort of paul’s locked bedroom door. it’s not normal for his stomach to do flips when darry grabs the wrong shirt the morning after their sleepovers. its not normal for him to hope darry doesnt realize it the wrong shirt, so he can darry his clothes more often. it’s not normal for his palms to get a little sweaty when darry sits too close. its not normal for his chest to get tight whenever darry leans over to whisper something. it’s not entirely normal for paul to immediately look for darry’s approval after he scores a goal or to immediately look for darry in a crowded room. it’s not normal that they hug more often than the other guys he knows. it’s not normal that almost every waking thought he has is of darry and when he'll see him next.)

it’s in eleventh grade that paul realizes he’s in love with darry. that he probably has been this whole time. the feeling clicks when they’re on one of their joyrides to just outside of tulsa. paul realizes he’s in an absolute, pure, and wholesome kind of love (like the kind of love that’s mentioned in all of darry’s favorite songs) when darry’s standing in the passenger seat and the wind ruffles his hair. he realizes he’s in love when he can’t take his eyes off of darry because the sun beaming just behind darry kind of looks like a halo and that must mean darry’s an angel. and paul can’t think of anything truer because darry could very well be an angel. he’s beautiful and handsome and kind and amazing and just overall perfect, a kind of perfect that's rare in tulsa, just like an angel would be. paul can’t seem to tear his eyes away from darry until the car swerves and darry nearly falls (paul makes a point to hold darry’s ankle whenever he stands up from then on).

paul’s in 12th grade and just 1 hour away from graduating when he gets his heart broken.

Something something Sunday, something something headcanon post

- Ponyboy loves mint chocolate chip ice cream, but dally hates it. He claims it tastes like toothpaste and every time he says this, the group has to hold pony back from attacking the guy (fair)

- (modern) Someone show the curtis brothers Steven universe sobs

- The curtis brothers have dimples and smile lines and other facial things. like Darry has crows feet and pony has worry lines on his forehead because I think it’s cool and I have those even though I am like. Young.

- What if Dallas had an older brother or someone that’s like how he is to Johnny but to Dallas and that person died and then his mom died and he hated his dad and had no reason to stay in New York so he left

- I just painted my nails with random ass old nail polish I found and every nail is a different color and I think that’s something cherry would do

- Pony, soda, and twobit are all double jointed in different areas of their body and they’ll just do shit to creep the rest of the guys out, especially dally and darry

- Dally is fine with gore n shit irl but cant handle weird body contorsions

- Johnny will randomly say the most horrifying things like “doesn’t everyone wish they could go to sleep and not wake up” and it just traumatizes ponyboy. Twobit is also like this but a bit more goofy. Pony ends up doing the same thing post-book but says it to sound like it’s a joke like two bit and when people tell him to stop he’s like “it’s true tho🧍🏽‍♂️”

- Since dally is so pale, he gets “red” so goddamn easily but he looks more pink. Every time he feels too much of any emotion, he’s pink. If it’s too hot he’s pink. Two bit makes fun of him for this and has been punched in the face at least twice for it. Pony is the same but that mf turns like BRIGHT red

- One sided dalbit bc Dallas is fucking aromantic but it’s funny for giggles and shits cuz twobitch just keeps embarrassing himself trying to flirt (vox and alastor core) (someone make a fic about this cries sobs)

- (Modern perchance) Pony is in like advanced classes n shit but fucking hates it. He’s still good at it and will cry if he gets a bad grade, but he doesn’t like it

- (Modern) Pony fucking hates Miguel O’Hara and is absolutely positively disgusted bc like half his friends simp so hard over that man (may or may not be based on me) (it is)

- two bit unironically believes so many conspiracy theories and spreads it to pony and Johnny

- I randomly made mozzarella sticks rn on a whim and soda would 100% impulse make food all the time and just figure out the recipe himself. It’s usually decent.

- Pony loves back to school season but hates actually going back. Like he likes the idea of going back to school and getting new school supplies, but within like, two days, he hates all his classes besides English

- Soda will burst out singing out a lot no matter where he is. Even at night. You can’t stop him (me)

- (Modern) Soda texts how blitzø does in helluva boss and pony had to translate for Darry a lot

- (Modern-ish to modern) Soda blasts tf outta Bruno mars when the Curtis boys are cleaning, and honestly they vibe with it. Him and twobit are such big Bruno mars fans. Steve hates Bruno mars but brushes it off bc soda likes his music

- (Modern) Rip pony and Johnny you would’ve loved Conan Gray and Mitski

- (Modern) Cherry and Marcia like Sabrina, Olivia, TS, artists like that but also Billie eilish, Renee rapp, and Chappell roan, etc. Cherry and Marcia kiss each other.

- (Modern) Marcia also listens to Midwest emo and shi. Also normal emo music. Johnny aswell.

- (Modern) Ponyboy LOVES tv girl

- (Modern) Sometimes cherry is just in the mood to listen to the most hardcore music ever and you’ll look at her and think she’s vibing to something sweet and girly and she takes her headphones out to hear you talk and it’s just screaming

- (Modern) Cherry and pony actually just have the most random assortment of music in their playlists I’ve decided. They have so many liked songs.

- (Modern) ponyboy would cry if he lost an account to something like Pinterest or Spotify, or just anything he’s had for a long time.

- (Modern) Pony leaves his phone on dnd (do not disturb) constantly. He never got Darry’s texts and Darry was like “dawg wtf” and made pony have it so Darry and soda go through the dnd. Johnny also goes through.

- (Modern) Johnny will just give himself piercings galore and his parents practically never notice because he’s either never at the house or they don’t care enough to perceive their son

- (Modern) Pony and Johnny have matching insta bios. They’re tv girl lyrics.

- (Modern) Ponyboy actually puts effort into choosing and editing pictures he takes, especially if he’s posting them, and even more especially if it’s johnny he’s posting. Johnny will just choose the goofiest possible pictures he has of anyone, ESPECIALLY pony, and post them. He literally has a picture of pony delirious and sick flipping him off as his lock screen

- Twobit taught his sister swear words and every time she says one their mom just glares at twobit

- Pony and johnny have matching earrings on opposite ears

- (Modern) Darry only lets pony get ear lobe piercings, but pony wanted an eyebrow piercing and got johnny to do it and when Darry noticed (immediately, mind you) he was grounded for two weeks. He was able to keep it though bc darry was scared it would get infected or heal weird

- Pony and Johnny would LOVE mitski and Conan gray in modern au

- Darry is really good at dancing, and before everything happened with his parents would do dance classes on his free time (which he didn’t have a lot of)

- Dally is aromantic.

Okay that’s it the rest I came up with in the past week

- Pony will draw or paint or whatever on anything around him. Don’t leave him alone with art supplies because one moment he’s painting a picture and the next his hand is painted blue. (me)

- Pony will get marked as rude a lot for not continuing conversations but it’s just because he doesn’t realize he’s supposed to say something back and gets anxiety when he doesn’t know how to continue a conversation (me)

- (Some parts of this are modern) Pony and johnny are like attached to each other. If pony is at his desk reading or drawing or doing schoolwork or smth, Johnny will pull up a chair and either rest his head on his shoulder from behind or hug his shoulders from behind to watch. If Johnny is just chilling on his phone, pony will appear next to him and immediately watch over his shoulder and curl up to Johnny. Johnny’s sleeping at the curtis house that night? You better move to the spare room soda, pony’s gonna sprawl out on the bed and Johnnys right up next to him. Pony hovers a lot around Johnny. It’s an anxiety thing

- (Modern-ish bc reasons I can specify) Pony will sometimes just mess with people’s hair without meaning too. He’s used to being able to fidget with and braid Johnny’s or soda’s hair so when he’s with someone it’s like a habit. He was chilling and yapping with Cherry and Marcia once and just reached for the ends of Cherry’s hair and started braiding. When she asked he was like “oh mb” and she’s like “nah, you’re fine girl” and now they all just do each other’s hair sometimes

- putting this here it’s not a hc but it was GONNA BE until I FORGOT (I am now mad)

- There’s gotta be a reason pony doesn’t like green yall…

- (Modern) pony uses gacha sometimes just to like come up with character designs or if he’s bored, but keeps that shit HIDDEN. if anyone around him (besides maybe Johnny) saw he would NEVER hear the end of it

- Soda likes sweets a lot and has like adhd executive dysfunction which just results in lots of cavities bc it physically pains him to brush his teeth sometimes (so me besides the cavities)
